Karur, September 27: At least 29 people, including children, were killed and more than 45 injured in a stampede during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur on Saturday. Karnataka Health Minister Ma Subramanian confirmed the casualties, while officials said over 30 people fainted and were rushed to hospitals.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin described the situation as “worrisome” and directed ministers Ma Subramanian and Anbil Mahesh, along with the District Collector, to ensure urgent relief and medical care.
The incident unfolded while Vijay was addressing a massive gathering from atop his campaign vehicle. He paused midway after noticing people collapsing and asked the crowd to clear the way for ambulances. In a bid to help, he threw water bottles from his vehicle and also announced that a child had gone missing. Despite his appeals to the police for assistance, the chaos continued.
Eyewitnesses said many of the victims had been waiting for hours under the sun to catch a glimpse of Vijay, leading to exhaustion and panic that spiraled into a deadly crush. Although Vijay resumed his address briefly, he cut it short after sensing the worsening situation.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stampede while emergency services continue to provide aid to the injured.
