Kuala Lumpur (Rajeev Sharma): Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh has addressed the growing criticism surrounding his film ‘Sardaar Ji 3’, defending the project’s intent and timing while asserting his unwavering loyalty to India. His remarks come amid escalating controversy after the film drew attention for featuring a Pakistani actress, and coincided with the India-Pakistan cricket match and the Pahalgam terror attack.
Speaking during a live concert in Malaysia as part of his ongoing Aura World Tour, Dosanjh shared his thoughts on stage — marking the first time he has publicly discussed the controversy in detail.
“My Roots Are Indian — That Will Never Change”
In an emotional address to his audience, the artist made it clear that his national identity is non-negotiable.
“I carry my country’s flag with pride. We are Indians first. Questioning that hurts,” he said.
Diljit pushed back against claims that ‘Sardaar Ji 3’ was insensitive or ill-timed, noting that production on the film wrapped up months before the recent attack in Pahalgam, which left the nation grieving.
“This film was shot well before tensions escalated. Linking it to recent events is unfair,” he explained.
Questions Over Match vs. Movie Narrative
Dosanjh also raised eyebrows by pointing out the apparent double standards in public discourse — particularly in relation to the India vs. Pakistan cricket match, which went ahead despite the heightened security situation.
“If sporting events between the two nations can proceed, why is a film project — completed earlier — under such scrutiny?” he asked.
His comments appeared to highlight how entertainment is often politicized, especially during periods of cross-border strain.
Backlash Over Co-Star’s Nationality
The controversy began after it was revealed that Pakistani actress Hania Aamir had a key role in the film. Social media outrage followed, with many netizens calling for a ban on the movie in India, citing national sentiment and timing concerns.
As a result, the film’s producers announced that ‘Sardaar Ji 3’ would not be released domestically, opting instead for international screenings only.
Diljit clarified that at the time of filming, relations between the two countries were relatively stable, and there was no indication of future unrest.
“Punjabis Have Always Served the Nation”
Rebuking narratives that questioned his patriotism, Diljit pointed to the historic sacrifices made by Sikh and Punjabi communities for India.
“Our community has always stood at the frontlines — in war, in peace, and in crisis. Accusing us of disloyalty is deeply disrespectful.”
Cultural Work Shouldn’t Be Weaponized, Says Dosanjh
The singer stressed the importance of keeping art and politics separate, especially when creators are unfairly caught in the crossfire of public anger.
“Cinema and music are made to connect people — not to divide. I have never, and will never, go against my country,” he affirmed.
