Chandigarh, September 24 – The Election Commission of India has announced that the bypoll to fill the vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Punjab will take place on October 24, with counting of votes scheduled the same day.
The vacancy was created after Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjeev Arora resigned from the Upper House earlier this year. His resignation, following his election as Ludhiana West MLA, was accepted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar with effect from July 1, 2025.
Arora, an industrialist-turned-politician, had been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha in March 2022 when AAP secured a majority in the Punjab Assembly. His entry into state politics through the Ludhiana West bypoll, where he defeated Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, prompted his decision to vacate his parliamentary seat.
With 92 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, AAP holds a clear advantage in the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. While the outcome is considered predictable, political observers are focused on the party’s choice of candidate, which could indicate its wider national strategy.
The October 24 bypoll will complete Punjab’s representation in the Rajya Sabha, filling a vacancy that has remained open for the past three months.
