National Times Bureau :- The Ministry of Finance has directed all central government ministries, departments and affiliated organisations to stop spending public money on gifts during Diwali or any other festival.
According to the fresh order issued by the Department of Expenditure, the move is part of the Centre’s effort to maintain strict fiscal discipline and avoid non-essential spending. The decision has been enforced with immediate effect.
The circular further noted that similar instructions have been issued in the past, and this is a continuation of the government’s broader policy to ensure prudent use of public resources.
“The Ministry of Finance, Department of Expenditure has been issuing guidelines from time to time to encourage fiscal responsibility and check wasteful expenditure. In line with these measures, it has now been decided that no money shall be spent on gifts or related items during Diwali and other festivals by Ministries, Departments, or other bodies of the Government of India,” the memorandum stated.
Officials clarified that this includes expenses on gifts traditionally exchanged with senior officers during the festive season. The ministry emphasised that careful and responsible use of public money remains a top priority.
