Cross-Border Drug Smuggling Operation Busted in Amritsar; One Arrested with Heroin and Cash

Amritsar: In a swift and targeted operation, the Amritsar Rural Police have unearthed a cross-border drug trafficking network, leading to the arrest of a key suspect and the seizure of narcotics and illegal cash.

The accused, identified as Shankar Singh, a resident of Guru Ki Wadali in Amritsar, was apprehended during the intelligence-led operation. Authorities recovered 6.286 kilograms of heroin, along with ₹4 lakh in suspected drug proceeds.

According to police sources, Singh is believed to have maintained direct contact with international drug suppliers, indicating strong overseas links behind the smuggling racket. The consignment, likely smuggled in from across the border, was being prepared for further distribution in the region.

FIR Registered; Probe Into Wider Network Ongoing

Following the seizure, an FIR was lodged at Lopoke Police Station, and further legal action is underway. Investigators are now working to uncover the larger syndicate, focusing on both supply chain origins and the intended distribution network within the country.

Police officials stated that multiple angles are being explored, including the suspect’s communication records and financial transactions, to track additional operatives involved in the operation.

“We are committed to going beyond the arrest and unearthing the entire nexus,” a senior police officer said. “This is part of our larger strategy to dismantle drug syndicates operating from across the border.”

Part of Broader Anti-Drug Campaign

The latest development marks another success in Punjab Police’s ongoing efforts to curb narcotics trafficking, especially in border districts often exploited by transnational criminal networks.

Officials highlighted that the heroin haul could be worth several crores in the international black market, underscoring the scale and risk posed by such smuggling activities. The investigation is also expected to involve coordination with national intelligence and anti-narcotics agencies to trace cross-border handlers.

Local residents have been urged to report suspicious activity in their areas, as part of the state police’s broader community engagement efforts in the fight against drugs.
