Punjab Police Arrest 95 Smugglers in Statewide Crackdown on Drugs

Chandigarh, September 12, 2025: Punjab Police intensified its fight against narcotics under the state’s anti-drug campaign “Yudh Nashian Virudh”, now running for 195 consecutive days. On Friday, coordinated raids were carried out at 404 locations across the state, leading to the arrest of 95 drug smugglers and the registration of 79 FIRs. With this action, the total number of smugglers arrested since the campaign began has reached 29,288.

Police teams seized 5.4 kg of heroin, 1 kg of opium, 1,657 intoxicant tablets and capsules, and ₹5,160 in drug money from those arrested.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has instructed top officials, including Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police, to ensure Punjab becomes drug-free. The state government has also formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, chaired by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor progress in the campaign.

Friday’s operation involved more than 150 police teams, comprising over 1,100 personnel, under the supervision of 72 gazetted officers. During the day-long crackdown, authorities also questioned 423 suspicious individuals.

The government has adopted a three-pronged strategy—Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP). As part of this effort, police convinced 47 people to voluntarily seek rehabilitation and de-addiction treatment during the operation.
