Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): In a move to further Alberta’s efforts in tackling family violence, Children and Family Services Minister Searle Turton will participate in the upcoming 5th World Conference of Women’s Shelters. The international gathering brings together frontline experts, policymakers, and advocates from across the globe to share innovative strategies and strengthen collaborative action.
The conference will serve as a platform for Alberta to engage with global leaders on cutting-edge solutions and evidence-based programs aimed at protecting vulnerable individuals and families from domestic violence.
“Our government is committed to making sure that those facing family violence can access safety and support when they need it most. This conference provides an invaluable opportunity to learn from the world’s best and ensure Alberta continues to lead with compassion, innovation, and strength,” said Minister Turton ahead of his departure.
Global Insights, Local Impact
Australia, known for its proactive and comprehensive approach to family violence prevention, is among the international leaders participating in the summit. With shared challenges such as addressing violence in both urban centres and rural communities, as well as in Indigenous populations, Alberta is well-positioned to gain from strengthened ties with Australian counterparts.
In addition to attending scheduled sessions, the minister will hold bilateral meetings with representatives from other jurisdictions, ensuring that Alberta’s approach to women’s shelter policy remains informed by global best practices and adaptable to local needs.
Broader Policy Alignment
A staff member from the Ministry of Children and Family Services will accompany the minister to assist in engagements and align takeaways with the province’s broader strategic priorities. According to officials, this mission supports Alberta’s ongoing work to modernize shelter systems and improve outcomes for those impacted by domestic and intimate partner violence.
All travel-related expenses for the mission will be disclosed publicly on the Government of Alberta’s travel and expense transparency portal.
