Surrey (Richa Walia): Linda Annis, longtime city councillor has formally announced her candidacy for Mayor of Surrey in the upcoming 2026 municipal election. At her campaign launch this week, Annis unveiled her vision to “get Surrey back on track,” pledging to prioritize public safety, city planning, and major infrastructure projects.
Running under the Surrey First slate, Annis emphasized that the city can no longer afford to be paralyzed by divisive debates. She sharply criticized current Mayor Brenda Locke, accusing her of focusing too heavily on the policing transition while other key issues have been left behind. “Keeping Surrey safe has to be the single biggest priority,” Annis told supporters. “Instead of picking fights with the provincial government, city council should be picking fights with gangs, extortionists, and drug dealers.” As Executive Director of Metro Vancouver Crime Stoppers, Annis highlighted her criminal justice and community safety experience as part of her leadership credentials.
She also promised renewed focus on capital projects, sustainable growth, and strong partnerships with both provincial and federal governments. With more than a year before the October 17, 2026 election, Annis says she is starting early to connect with residents across Surrey: “I want the time to get out and talk to as many people as I possibly can. This campaign is about listening, building trust, and working for what’s best for Surrey.” Her campaign signals a revival of the Surrey First banner, once associated with former mayors Dianne Watts and Linda Hepner, who both left lasting marks on the city’s rapid growth and development.
