Modi and Putin Hold Talks in Car Ride Before Bilateral Meeting at SCO Summit

Tianjin, China: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted their strong personal rapport at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. Their camaraderie was evident when the two leaders shared a warm hug before travelling together in Putin’s Aurus Senat limousine for a private discussion ahead of their formal bilateral meeting. Sources revealed that President Putin waited nearly ten minutes for Prime Minister Modi to join him, and the two conversed for about 45 minutes during the car ride before arriving at the venue.

Afterward, Prime Minister Modi shared on X, “After the proceedings at the SCO Summit venue, President Putin and I travelled together to the venue of our bilateral meeting. Conversations with him are always insightful.”

The formal talks, which lasted more than an hour, were described by Modi as “excellent.” He noted that discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, fertilisers, space, security, and culture. The leaders also exchanged perspectives on pressing global issues, with significant attention on the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Prime Minister Modi underlined the importance of peace, urging dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward. He called for an end to hostilities and a sustainable peace process. Both sides also reviewed collaboration in economic, financial, and energy sectors, reaffirming what Modi termed the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between India and Russia, which he said contributes to regional and global stability.
