Himachal Monsoon Havoc: Death Toll Touches 276, Roads and Utilities in Ruins

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh continues to reel under the impact of relentless monsoon rains as the death toll has risen to 276 since June 20, the State Disaster Management Authority confirmed. The breakdown reveals 143 fatalities in rain-triggered incidents like landslides, house collapses, and flash floods, while 133 people died in road mishaps.

Massive Damage Across the State

Within the past 24 hours, the downpour has blocked 366 roads, crippled power supply in 929 locations, and stalled 139 drinking water schemes, according to the HPSDMA bulletin.

National Highway-305 in Kullu and NH-154 in Mandi remain shut due to landslides and road sinking. Many key link roads in Mandi, Kangra, Kullu, Sirmaur, and Chamba are inaccessible.

District Situation

  • Kullu reported the sharpest blow with 125 road closures, 281 transformers damaged, and 56 water supply projects cut off.
  • Mandi faced 174 blocked roads, 98 transformers down, and 60 disrupted water schemes.

Several stretches such as Lug Valley, Manikaran, Sainj, Jibhi, the Mandi-Jogindernagar belt, and Thangi-Charang in Kinnaur have been completely cut off. Restoration teams are working on war footing, but continuous rainfall and fresh landslides are hampering progress.

Govt Caution

Authorities have advised citizens to stay away from unsafe travel routes, warning that more disruptions could occur as monsoon activity remains intense.
