America’s Nicest Judge” Frank Caprio Passes Away at 88 After Battle With Cancer

Rhode Island, U.S. Providence (National Times Bureau): The Honorable Frank Caprio, renowned for his compassionate courtroom rulings that garnered global attention on social media, has passed away at the age of 88 following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Known affectionately as “America’s nicest judge”, Caprio gained international acclaim through his television show Caught in Providence, where his exceptional empathy and kindness in the courtroom captivated the hearts of millions worldwide. His guiding principle, “I don’t wear a badge under my robe; I wear a heart,” exemplified his distinctive approach to justice.

Caprio had served with distinction as the Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court from 1985 until his retirement in 2023. In recognition of his remarkable service, his courtroom was subsequently renamed in his honor, and he was bestowed the title of Chief Judge Emeritus.

Just a day prior to his passing, Caprio shared an emotional video on Instagram from his hospital bed, humbly requesting the public to remember him in their prayers after experiencing a health setback. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee ordered flags to be flown at half-staff, eulogizing Caprio as a “Rhode Island treasure” and commending him as a powerful symbol of empathy and fairness.

Caprio is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joyce, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His enduring legacy of compassion, humility, and humanity will continue to inspire individuals worldwide.
