Celebrate Local Food Week and Open Farm Days: Support Alberta’s Food Producers

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): This August, Albertans have a unique opportunity to connect with the province’s rich agricultural heritage during Local Food Week and Open Farm Days. Farms, ranches, and agri-tourism operators across Alberta are opening their doors to offer educational and hands-on experiences that highlight where our food comes from and how it’s grown.

Alberta has long been recognized globally for producing premium-quality food with strict standards in food safety, animal welfare, biosecurity, and environmental care. Open Farm Days shines a spotlight on the hardworking farmers, ranchers, and food processors who feed not only Albertans but Canadians and people around the world.

Whether visiting a u-pick farm to gather fresh fruits and vegetables, purchasing locally grown products, or participating in farm tours and culinary events, residents and visitors alike can support local food producers while enjoying the province’s stunning rural landscapes.

“This week, Albertans can help celebrate the farmers and entrepreneurs that put safe, high-quality food on our plates,” said RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation. “This year’s Open Farm Days theme, ‘Water, The Lifeblood of Every Farm,’ highlights the vital role of water and irrigation in sustaining Alberta’s agriculture and communities.”

Agri-tourism continues to flourish, attracting visitors seeking authentic farm-to-table dining, culinary adventures, and farm stays. These experiences boost local economies by driving business to shops, restaurants, and attractions in rural Alberta. The provincial government has been a proud supporter of the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies, which organizes Open Farm Days, helping grow food and culinary tourism across the province.

“Alberta’s rural and agri-tourism sectors play a vital role in the continued growth of our economy,” noted Andrew Boitchenko, Minister of Tourism and Sport. “Events like Open Farm Days invite visitors to explore the innovative farms, local businesses, and unique experiences beyond Alberta’s major tourist spots.”

On August 16 and 17, participating farms will welcome guests for tours and offer the chance to buy fresh, Alberta-grown products. Many hosts are also featuring special culinary experiences crafted by top chefs from rural Alberta, providing farm-to-table meals that celebrate the best of local ingredients.

Blair Lebsack, chef and co-owner of RGE RD and The Butchery, expressed his passion for local produce: “A lot of locally grown ingredients really resonate with Albertans and Canadians. Our wheat and Alberta beef are known around the world, helping to highlight Canadian cuisine. I love working with local producers who skilfully cultivate what the land can offer us.”

Local Food Week and Open Farm Days are perfect occasions to connect with Alberta’s agricultural roots, support local farmers, and enjoy fresh, sustainable food straight from the source.
