20 Child Beggars Rescued in a Day Across Punjab, Total Rises to 169 Under Project JIWANJYOT 2.0

Chandigarh, July 23, 2025– In a major push under Project JIWANJYOT 2.0, the Punjab Government rescued 20 vulnerable child beggars in a single day across 15 districts, marking a significant step in its campaign against child exploitation. The rescue operation, led by the Department of Social Security, Women and Child Development, was carried out under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

Social Security Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur confirmed that with the latest operation, the total number of children rescued within just seven days has climbed to 169. The state’s District Child Protection Units (DCPUs) conducted these special drives at 29 locations spanning Barnala, Bathinda, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Mansa, Malerkotla, Moga, Patiala, Rupnagar, Sangrur, SAS Nagar (Mohali), Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Tarn Taran.

Officials observed a positive trend, with some areas reporting zero cases of child begging, indicating improved ground enforcement. Of the 20 children rescued today, 9 have been safely reunited with their families following identity verification. Six others have been shifted to Child Care Institutions, while verification is still underway for the remaining five.

No FIRs were registered in today’s rescues, and there was no immediate need for DNA testing, though officials assured it would be done if required. Dr. Baljit Kaur reiterated that the government is not only removing children from the streets but also working to secure their future by providing them access to education and mainstream social inclusion.

She also instructed DCPUs to take legal action against parents or guardians who force children into begging, despite multiple warnings. Appealing to citizens for support, Dr. Kaur urged the public to report any instance of child begging by dialing the Child Helpline at 1098.
