Kelowna (National Times) A fast-moving wildfire near Kelowna has prompted emergency officials to issue an evacuation order for several homes threatened by the Whelan Creek wildfire burning in the Ellison area, east of Kelowna International Airport.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan confirmed that seven properties along Rockface Road and Dead Pine Drive are under immediate evacuation orders. Residents of these homes are expected to remain displaced overnight as firefighting efforts continue.
In addition, an evacuation alert has been issued for 106 nearby addresses, with authorities urging residents to stay ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
The wildfire, first reported Sunday afternoon, drew a swift response from both the BC Wildfire Service and the RCMP, who began tactical evacuations in the affected area. Officers confirmed the fire was spreading uphill toward Postill Lake and threatening nearby recreational areas that include cabins and campsites.
As of the latest update, the Whelan Creek wildfire has expanded to approximately 4.31 hectares. According to the BC Wildfire Service, the fire is currently being held, meaning it is not expected to grow beyond current boundaries under prevailing conditions.
Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, with crews working on containment lines to prevent further spread.
Residents are urged to stay informed through official regional and provincial emergency channels, and to follow instructions swiftly if evacuation orders escalate.
