Patna (National Times): In a significant development within the Sikh religious sphere, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has been officially declared a Tankhaiya by the Panj Pyare of Takht Sri Patna Sahib, one of Sikhism’s five sacred thrones. The decision comes after Badal failed to appear before the Takht despite receiving two formal summons.
The move follows an earlier controversy involving two high-ranking religious leaders, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, executive head of Takht Sri Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara, and Jathedar Tek Singh of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, who were declared Tankhaiya in May for disobeying a Hukamnama (edict). Sukhbir Badal was allegedly connected to the controversy and was directed to appear before the Takht on June 1. However, his continued absence has now resulted in disciplinary action.
What Led to the Declaration?
The Panj Pyare had convened on multiple occasions to address concerns related to violations of Sikh Maryada (code of conduct). During an emergency meeting on May 21, it was concluded that Sukhbir Singh Badal had played a conspiratorial role in supporting the actions of the two jathedars who were earlier declared Tankhaiya. Consequently, the Takht issued two summons for Badal to explain his stance. His failure to comply has now been deemed a serious breach of religious discipline.
Significance of the ‘Tankhaiya’ Tag
In Sikh tradition, being labeled a Tankhaiya is one of the gravest forms of religious censure. It signifies that an individual has violated the core tenets of the Sikh faith or defied the authority of the Takht. A Tankhaiya is expected to appear in person before the Takht, express remorse, and seek forgiveness. The punishment, if any, is then deliberated upon by the five high priests.
Religious Fallout and Political Ramifications
This declaration comes at a time when the SAD is attempting to rebuild its credibility among the Sikh masses, and Sukhbir Badal’s failure to respond to the summons is being seen as disrespectful to religious institutions. No statement has yet been issued by Badal or the SAD regarding the decision.
The religious censure could potentially deepen internal divisions within the SAD and may impact the party’s image in upcoming political contests, especially in rural Sikh-dominated constituencies.
With both Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and Tek Singh already declared Tankhaiya, and now Sukhbir Badal facing the same, the spotlight remains firmly on how the SAD leadership navigates this deepening rift with key Sikh religious institutions. Further directions from Takht Sri Patna Sahib are expected in the coming days.
