Mumbai/Chandigarh, June 24, 2025 — As protests erupt across parts of India over Diljit Dosanjh’s latest film, the Punjabi entertainment industry has closed ranks in support of the global music and film icon. Accusations of cultural insensitivity have been levelled against certain scenes and dialogues in the movie, prompting screening cancellations and calls for a ban. However, a growing chorus of artists and fans is defending Dosanjh’s artistic freedom, sparking a nationwide conversation on creativity and identity.
The controversy began when religious and political groups objected to specific depictions in the film, claiming they were offensive to cultural and religious sentiments. In response, some theatres halted showings amid growing public demonstrations.
Veteran Punjabi actress Nirmal Rishi stepped forward in strong defence of Dosanjh, stating, “This film was made with sincere artistic intent. There are far worse films being released every day. His work should be allowed to be seen.” Criticizing the backlash, she added, “The same man who made the country proud globally is now being labelled a traitor that’s deeply unfair.”
Other major voices from the Punjabi music and film scene echoed her sentiments. Singer and lyricist Amrit Maan said, “Diljit is not just a star, he is our identity. Questioning his intent is an insult to Punjabi culture.” Actor-comedian Karamjit Anmol asserted, “We all stand with him. We will not tolerate anyone trying to malign the dignity of one of our own.” Popular singer Jasmine Sandlas also weighed in: “Artists like Diljit have taken our voice to the global stage. These accusations are an insult to years of his hard work.”
Online, the hashtag #IStandWithDiljit trended across platforms, with thousands of fans expressing solidarity and outrage at what they see as an attack on one of Punjab’s most cherished artists. Supporters highlighted not only his global achievements but also his grounded, humble persona and dedication to his roots.
Though the film remains under scrutiny in certain states, the controversy has sparked a broader cultural debate. Many now see this not just as a dispute over a film, but as a flashpoint in the ongoing struggle for creative freedom and cultural pride in India.
