Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): U Turn (Jay Chowdhary) and First Step Together Society (Anita and Savita) are making tireless efforts to empower refugees to utilize their skills for Canada’s benefit. A meeting was held at the Genesis Centre with representatives from Ukraine and Afghanistan refugee groups, where valuable information was shared and common challenges faced by refugee families were discussed. An Afghan representative noted that over 3,000 Afghan refugee families reside in Calgary, with approximately 5,000 more across Alberta, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted programs. Afghan refugees in Calgary face numerous challenges while rebuilding their lives, particularly women who struggle with language barriers, unemployment, and social isolation. A significant obstacle for refugee women is the language barrier, limiting their job prospects and societal integration. Many remain dependent on their husbands, who are often the sole breadwinners and face pressure to send money abroad or manage child support costs.
“These women experience isolation and stress, necessitating more opportunities for independence and family support,” stated a representative from First Step Together Society. There is a growing demand for programs focused on mental health, skill development, and community engagement. Services such as cooking classes, sewing workshops, English language training, and mental health support for mothers and children are essential tools for empowerment. Community leaders urge government bodies and private partners to provide funding and support for initiatives that enable refugee women to gain confidence, skills, and independence. Students from Calgary University and other renowned personalities also attended this meeting.
