Brasilia [Brazil], June 7, 2025 – India has been officially named the host of the next BRICS Parliamentary Forum in 2026, as announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at the conclusion of the 11th edition of the forum held in Brasilia. The announcement came alongside a strong joint declaration by member nations, which collectively condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, and endorsed a global zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.
In his statement, Birla reaffirmed India’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and said, “The agenda will be set for the Summit in India, and India will ensure a successful and productive hosting of the event.” The joint declaration specifically recognized terrorism as a threat to global peace and called for collective international efforts to combat it.
Speaking on the responsible use of emerging technologies, Birla emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI). He noted that BRICS countries had agreed on the essential role of AI but also highlighted the necessity of ethical governance in its use.
The discussions during the forum also focused on economic inclusion, enhanced trade, and inter-parliamentary collaboration. Birla reaffirmed India’s support for the rule of law and global dialogue, urging continued parliamentary exchanges and cooperation to improve governance and public welfare.
Ten nations participated in this year’s forum: India, Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Iran, UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. Delegations from their respective parliaments contributed to shaping the summit’s final declaration, reflecting shared concerns and policy priorities.
The Indian delegation was led by Om Birla and included Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, MPs Surendra Singh Nagar, Vijay Baghel, Vivek Thakur, Shabari Bareddy, as well as Lok Sabha Secretary General Uttpal Kumar Singh, Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Modi, and other senior officials.
