India Likely to Miss G7 Summit After No Invitation from Canada

New Delhi/Ottawa, June 2, 2025 – In a significant diplomatic shift, India has not received an invitation to the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada and is expected to skip the event, according to reliable government sources. The development marks a break from recent years where India, though not a G7 member, was regularly invited as a guest participant at the high-profile summit.

Sources cited by The Tribune revealed that the Canadian government, the host of this year’s G7 Summit, did not include India in its list of guest nations, a decision viewed in Delhi as politically loaded. The omission comes amid ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two countries and suggests a recalibration in Ottawa’s approach to its bilateral ties with New Delhi.

India has often participated in G7 Summits at the invitation of past host nations like France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan. These participations underscored India’s growing global stature and its key role in tackling transnational challenges such as climate change, pandemic response, digital transformation, and global security.

However, this year’s summit hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to focus heavily on Western economic cooperation, Ukraine war repercussions, energy security, and climate action. The absence of India one of the world’s largest economies and the Global South’s leading voice could narrow the summit’s scope on emerging economies’ perspectives.

As of now, there has been no official statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs or from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office regarding the guest list or the diplomatic rationale behind India’s exclusion.

Observers note that bilateral relations between India and Canada have remained strained over various issues, including Canada’s handling of extremist elements operating on its soil and its response to Operation Sindoor and India’s internal security concerns.

If India does not attend, it will be one of the rare instances in recent years where the country is absent from a G7 forum at a time when its global diplomatic engagement has been on the rise.
