Tel Aviv, May 28, 2025: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed that Mohammed Sinwar, the head of Hamas operations in Gaza and brother of top Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, has been eliminated in an Israeli airstrike.
According to Netanyahu, the targeted strike was carried out on May 13, 2025, and focused on a Hamas command center located underneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. Sinwar had risen to prominence following the reported deaths of his brother Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif, the leader of Hamas’s armed wing, in 2024.
Netanyahu made the announcement during a press briefing, stating, “Mohammed Sinwar was eliminated in an airstrike targeting a key Hamas command facility. This is a significant blow to the leadership structure of Hamas in Gaza.”
Mohammed Sinwar was believed to have played a major role in the group’s hostage negotiation operations and was allegedly linked to the 2006 abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
Though the Israeli Prime Minister has declared his death, Hamas has not yet confirmed the killing. Military sources in Israel have also noted they are not yet able to independently verify the elimination.
The announcement comes as part of Israel’s ongoing military efforts to dismantle Hamas’s top leadership and infrastructure in Gaza following a renewed surge in hostilities. Khan Younis has seen repeated bombardments over recent months, and Israeli defense officials have repeatedly stated that underground networks and command hubs are among their primary targets.
This latest development further escalates the already tense situation in the region and underscores the continuing volatility of the Israel-Gaza conflict.
