New Delhi, May 28, 2025 – In a major relief for taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Financial Year 2024–25 (Assessment Year 2025–26) from July 31 to September 15, 2025. The extension applies to individuals who are not subject to tax audit, which includes most salaried taxpayers.
The CBDT stated that the extension was necessary due to significant changes in the structure and content of the ITR forms. These modifications aim to enhance transparency and ease of compliance for filers. Additionally, more time was needed to roll out the updated ITR utilities and ensure system readiness for the new forms.
Tax professionals and stakeholders had raised concerns about delays in utility availability and the complexities introduced in the revised return formats. The government’s response has been welcomed across sectors, with experts advising taxpayers to utilize this extra time to ensure accurate and timely filing.
The Income Tax Department has reiterated that the new ITR forms are designed to simplify disclosures and strengthen reporting accuracy, particularly for those with multiple income sources, foreign assets, or digital investments.
