New York, May 24, 2025 (Babushahi Network) – India has forcefully rebutted Pakistan’s allegations on the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) at the United Nations Security Council, accusing Islamabad of distorting facts and using disinformation tactics to cover its record of sponsoring terrorism.
Speaking during the Arria Formula Meeting on “Protecting Water in Armed Conflict – Protecting Civilian Lives,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, asserted that while India has always honored the IWT in good faith, Pakistan’s conduct has violated the spirit of the 65-year-old treaty through repeated wars and relentless cross-border terror.
“India entered into the Indus Water Treaty 65 years ago in good faith. Yet Pakistan has violated its very spirit by inflicting three wars and thousands of terror attacks, claiming over 20,000 Indian lives in the past four decades,” Harish said, citing the most recent attack in Pahalgam as a brutal reminder of Pakistan’s continued support for terrorism.
India suspended the IWT in April 2025 after the Pahalgam terror strike that killed 26 people. Harish explained that the decision to hold the treaty in abeyance was not taken lightly but was necessary in light of Pakistan’s persistent support for groups targeting Indian civilians and infrastructure.
The Indian envoy emphasized that Pakistan’s obstructionist stance has prevented updates to the treaty despite significant changes in demographics, energy needs, climate concerns, and dam safety technologies over the past decades. “Some of the old dams now face serious safety risks, and even critical infrastructure like the Tulbul Navigation Project in Jammu and Kashmir was attacked by terrorists in 2012,” he noted.
India had formally requested Pakistan’s cooperation in modifying aspects of the treaty in accordance with evolving realities, but Islamabad refused all proposals, Harish said. “It is clear that it is Pakistan which remains in violation of the Indus Water Treaty,” he concluded.
India reiterated that it would remain committed to responsible water management as an upper riparian state, but will not allow the treaty to be used as leverage by a nation that sponsors terrorism.
