National Times Bureau, May 19, 2025: After a temporary suspension due to heightened security concerns, the Border Security Force (BSF) will resume the iconic evening flag retreat ceremonies at both the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar and the Sadqi border in Fazilka starting Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The move comes nearly two weeks after the BSF halted public access to these ceremonies following the Pahalgam terrorist attack, which had raised nationwide security alarms. The decision to resume was taken following a review of the current security situation.
The ceremonies, which showcase the lowering of the national flags of India and Pakistan in a synchronized display of military discipline and patriotic fervor, are major tourist attractions. While the flag ritual continued privately without public spectators during the suspension, the ceremonial parades will now again be open for visitors.
At the Attari-Wagah border, large crowds are expected to return to the stadium-like seating area where patriotic chants and coordinated drills between BSF and Pakistan Rangers captivate thousands each evening. The Fazilka ceremony, held at the Sadqi-Sulemanki joint checkpost, draws smaller crowds but is equally rich in symbolism and local enthusiasm.
BSF officials have urged visitors to follow all safety protocols and cooperate with security personnel. Additional deployment of forces and surveillance measures have been introduced to ensure a secure environment for the public.
The resumption of these ceremonies marks a step toward normalcy after a period of heightened tension and underscores the continued cultural and national significance of these daily events.
