Heatwave Alert in Mohali: Health Department Lists Do’s and Don’ts to Stay Safe

Mohali (National Times): In response to the sweltering conditions affecting the region, the Mohali District Health Department has issued a public advisory outlining steps for residents to protect themselves from the extreme heat.

According to Civil Surgeon Dr. Sangeeta Jain, the current weather poses a heightened risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and other health complications, particularly for high-risk groups. “Extreme temperatures are most dangerous for young children, elderly citizens, outdoor workers, and individuals with health conditions like heart disease and hypertension,” she stated.

Dr. Anamika Soni, the District Epidemiologist, stressed that the body’s ability to regulate temperature can be impaired during prolonged heat exposure. “Heat exhaustion can lead to symptoms such as nausea, headaches, dry skin, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness,” she explained.

To stay safe, the department has advised the following:

What You Should Do:

  • Drink water frequently, even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Use protective gear such as hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas when stepping out.
  • Consume seasonal fruits and stay nourished with cooling fluids like lassi and lime water.
  • Seek shaded or air-cooled environments during the hottest hours of the day.

What You Should Not Do:

  • Avoid outdoor activities from late morning to early evening.
  • Refrain from consuming dehydrating drinks such as alcohol, tea, or coffee.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
  • Don’t walk barefoot or engage in heavy physical labor during peak heat hours.

Officials hope that through public cooperation and adherence to the advisory, the risks posed by the heatwave can be significantly minimized across Mohali.
