Punjab CM Mann Warns Centre Against Water Diversion, Vows to Block BBMB Moves at Nangal

Nangal (Rupnagar) | May 11, 2025 — Amid escalating tensions at the border, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann launched a fierce attack on the BJP-led central government, accusing it of using the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to illegally divert Punjab’s water to other states, particularly Haryana.

Addressing a protest gathering in Nangal, Mann said it was “unfortunate” that while Punjab helps safeguard 532 km of the international border with Pakistan, the Union Government is attempting to strip the state of its rightful water share. “Punjab is alert at the border, supporting the Army, while the BJP plays dirty politics with our waters,” he said.

He alleged that BBMB is being misused by the Centre to bypass state rights and warned that any attempt to release water without Punjab’s consent could trigger serious law and order issues. “If any BBMB officer comes to release water now, they will be responsible for their own safety,” Mann declared, adding that the state government will not allow a single drop to be taken away.

Mann also slammed Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, blaming him for orchestrating the move from behind the scenes. “Khattar and BJP are underestimating Punjabis. We protect the borders, and we will protect our waters too,” he said.

Criticizing Kisan Unions for remaining silent, Mann said they are missing in action when it comes to critical state issues. “No AC trolleys here, so they won’t come,” he quipped.

The Chief Minister reiterated that Punjab’s groundwater is overexploited, rivers are drying up, and the state simply has no spare water to offer. He also called for a complete restructuring of BBMB and announced that an audit of its finances will be sought, alleging misuse of Punjab’s taxpayer funds.

While confirming that some water was recently released to Rajasthan for the armed forces, he clarified it was in national interest, not under pressure from the Centre.

Flanked by Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains, Mann concluded with a warning to BJP and BBMB: “Punjab will fight back. We will sit at Nangal and stop this injustice.”
