New Delhi, May 9, 2025: The Indian Premier League has been suspended indefinitely due to growing national security concerns following the military escalation between India and Pakistan, senior BCCI sources confirmed on Friday.
The decision was made hours after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala was abruptly called off mid-game. The venue, situated close to Pathankot, where air raid alerts were issued, became a focal point of concern for both officials and players. The match, which began late due to rain, was halted when floodlights went out, initially believed to be a technical fault. Moments later, players were urgently taken off the field as security risks became apparent.
“We have decided to indefinitely suspend the IPL. The players’ safety is our utmost priority. Right now, national interest is of utmost importance,” a senior BCCI official stated.
The stadium, nearly 80% full, was evacuated amid rising tensions. Spectators were seen chanting anti-Pakistan slogans as they exited. Panic reportedly spread among players, particularly foreign cricketers, who expressed fears about their safety and considered returning home.
In the lead-up to this incident, another match Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings, also scheduled in Dharamsala had already been relocated to Ahmedabad. Following the suspension, flights to and from Dharamsala were cancelled, and team buses were rerouted under heightened security.
The BCCI and IPL governing body are now waiting on further government directives before deciding on a potential resumption.
