New Delhi, April 16, 2025: Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna has officially recommended Justice B.R. Gavai as his successor, setting the stage for a historic transition in the country’s top judicial office. The recommendation was sent to the central government on Tuesday, in line with the convention that the outgoing CJI names the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court as their successor.
Justice Gavai, currently the second-most senior judge, is poised to become India’s 51st Chief Justice. His elevation will be significant—not only for its adherence to seniority but also because he will be only the second Dalit CJI in Indian history after Justice K.G. Balakrishnan. Justice Gavai is expected to take oath on May 14, a day after CJI Khanna retires.
Appointed to the Supreme Court in May 2019, Justice Gavai has had a distinguished judicial career and is known for his firm but balanced approach to constitutional matters. Born in Maharashtra, he previously served as a judge of the Bombay High Court.
His term as Chief Justice, however, will be brief—lasting just six months until his retirement in November 2025. Yet, the symbolism of his appointment is resonating across legal and political circles, marking a moment of representation and continuity.
Once the government processes the recommendation, the President will formally appoint Justice Gavai, following constitutional protocol.
