Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): Radio Sursangam organized a pivotal media debate for federal candidates in Calgary’s Northeast ridings. Multiple political parties participated actively, but no Conservative candidates were present, raising concerns within the local community.
The well-attended event brought together residents from Calgary Skyview, McKnight, and East Calgary, providing them with a valuable opportunity to hear directly from the candidates contesting the upcoming federal election. The debate featured Liberal MP George Chahal, Hafeez Malik, Rajesh Angral, Arlington Antonio Santiago ( NDP), representatives from the PPC, and several independent candidates.
The session served as an important platform for public discourse, democratic engagement, and voter awareness. However, the complete absence of Conservative candidates from all three ridings did not go unnoticed. Many attendees speculated that it may have been a coordinated decision by the Conservative Party to skip the event and avoid potential media scrutiny.
Throughout the evening, candidates addressed key issues such as healthcare, housing, immigration, and public safety, all of which hold deep relevance for constituents. Yet, the lack of Conservative representation left a visible gap in the conversation and prompted questions about the party’s commitment to openness, transparency, and public accountability.
Ranjit Sidhu of Radio Sursangam expressed gratitude to fellow media professionals, including Rishi Nagar, Jay Chowdhary (RedFM), Rajeev Sharma, Ravinder Grover (National Times), and Satvinder Singh (Jag Punjabi), for their support in making the event a success. Sidhu confirmed that invitations were extended to all candidates, and while some sent last-minute messages with excuses, the debate moved forward as planned. Despite the absence of a major political party, the event was widely applauded for promoting civic engagement, encouraging transparency, and helping voters make informed choices.
Now, community members are seeking answers from Conservative candidates on why they chose to miss such a critical opportunity to connect with voters and be part of the democratic process.
