Beijing, April 9, 2025: China announced a sharp escalation in its trade war with the United States on Wednesday, raising tariffs on American goods to 84% starting Thursday. The move came just days after US President Donald Trump imposed a sweeping 104% tariff on Chinese imports.
Beijing also launched a new case against the US at the World Trade Organisation and imposed fresh trade restrictions on American firms operating in China. The Ministry of Commerce said the US must be prepared for firm retaliation if it continues with “economic and trade restrictions.”
“If the US insists on further escalating its restrictions, China has the firm will and abundant means to fight to the end,” the Ministry declared in a statement accompanying its new white paper on US-China trade.
While countries around the world have begun negotiating trade deals with Washington, Beijing avoided confirming whether it would engage in talks.
Last week, China responded to Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs with a 34% levy on all US imports, export controls on rare earth minerals, and other retaliatory measures. Trump then announced an additional 50% hike, cutting off negotiations and blaming China’s trade practices.
In its latest retaliation, China added 11 US companies to its “unreliable entities” list, barring them from receiving dual-use goods from Chinese firms. The list includes defense-related companies such as American Photonics and SYNEXXUS.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian warned the US against coercion. “If the US truly wants to resolve issues, it should adopt an attitude of equality, respect, and mutual benefit,” he said.
