Mark Carney Counters Harper’s Remarks, Highlights His Role in Managing 2008 Economic Turmoil

Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal leader Mark Carney responded firmly on Tuesday after former Prime Minister Stephen Harper downplayed his economic leadership during a political rally supporting Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

Speaking at a campaign event in Edmonton on Monday night, Harper drew comparisons between Mark Carney and Pierre Poilievre, both of whom previously served under his government. Harper voiced his preference for Poilievre, stating that he himself managed Canada’s response to the 2008 financial crisis, implying Mark Carney overstated his own involvement.

However, Mark Carney, who served as Governor of the Bank of Canada during the global financial downturn, addressed Stephen Harper’s remarks, highlighting the critical decisions made during that period in close collaboration with then-finance minister Jim Flaherty.

“I was actively involved in shaping Canada’s economic strategy alongside Jim Flaherty during a pivotal time,” Carney said, adding that “Pierre Poilievre was not part of those conversations, nor was he entrusted with significant responsibilities in that context.”

At the time of the crisis, Poilievre served in junior roles, including as a parliamentary secretary, only being promoted to cabinet years later in 2013. Carney emphasized that experience in navigating national economic emergencies is earned through active participation, not just simply association.

He added, “Mr Poilievre has yet to demonstrate a track record in managing complex challenges, either during the financial crisis or since.”

The exchange has added fuel to the political debate surrounding leadership credentials ahead of the upcoming federal election, scheduled to be held on April 28.
