Punjabi Language Receives Historic Recognition in Georgia, USA

Georgia (National Times): In a landmark decision, the Georgia State Assembly has unanimously passed House Resolution 430, officially recognizing the Punjabi language and celebrating the significant contributions of the Sikh and Punjabi communities in the state.

This groundbreaking move marks the first time a U.S. state has granted legislative recognition to Punjabi, a language spoken by over 600 million people worldwide. The resolution cements Punjabi’s status as an essential cultural and linguistic force, both in the United States and globally.

Surinder Singh Lalli, a prominent Atlanta-based businessman and president of the Sikh American Society of Georgia, praised the resolution as a historic achievement.

“This recognition is a proud moment for the Punjabi and Sikh communities in Georgia and beyond,” Lalli stated. “It reflects the growing influence and contributions of our community, and we are deeply grateful to the legislators and all community members who made this possible.”

Passed on March 22, 2025, the resolution underscores Georgia’s commitment to embracing its diverse population and honoring the cultural heritage of its residents.

Punjabi, the world’s 9th most widely spoken language, is a vital part of the cultural identity of millions in South Asia and the global diaspora. Originating from the Punjab region, which spans parts of present-day India and Pakistan, Punjabi is written in two distinct scripts: Gurmukhi in India and Shahmukhi in Pakistan. This dual-script tradition reflects its rich linguistic heritage and adaptability.

Beyond the subcontinent, Punjabi is widely spoken in countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States, where vibrant diaspora communities have kept the language alive through music, literature, and religious practices—particularly within Sikhism, where Punjabi is the liturgical language of the Guru Granth Sahib.

With this recognition, Georgia joins a growing list of regions worldwide acknowledging Punjabi’s cultural significance. In Canada, Punjabi is the third most spoken language, while in the UK, it ranks among the top five. The language’s global influence is further amplified by the widespread popularity of Punjabi music, including Bhangra and modern pop, which has resonated with diverse audiences across the world.

Impact and Significance

The passage of House Resolution 430 is more than a symbolic gesture—it has far-reaching implications for education, cultural preservation, and community empowerment.

Advocates believe this recognition could pave the way for the establishment of Punjabi language programs in Georgia’s schools and universities, promoting a greater understanding of South Asian heritage among younger generations.

Additionally, it highlights the growing visibility of the Sikh and Punjabi communities, who have played a crucial role in Georgia’s economic and social development through businesses, philanthropy, and cultural contributions.

“This is a step toward inclusivity,” said a spokesperson from the Sikh American Society of Georgia. “It sends a clear message that our language and culture are valued here.”

With the passing of House Resolution 430, Georgia has taken a significant step in acknowledging the contributions of its diverse residents and preserving the cultural fabric that makes the state unique.
