Nagpur, Match 18, 2025 : Nagpur police have imposed a curfew in multiple areas following violent protests over the demand to remove Aurangzeb’s grave. The curfew, enforced under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), will remain in effect until further notice.
Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal issued the order after around 250 members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered near the Shivaji Maharaj statue in Mahal, raising slogans and demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave. Tensions escalated when about 100 people gathered in Bhaldarpura, disrupting public order.
The curfew applies to several police station limits, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodharanagar, and Kapilnagar. People are prohibited from stepping out except for medical reasons, and gatherings of more than five people are banned.
Violence erupted in Hansapuri when masked individuals vandalized shops, set fire to vehicles, and pelted stones. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers carried sharp weapons and bottles, causing significant damage.
Commissioner Singal assured that the situation is now under control. He confirmed that FIRs have been lodged, and combing operations are underway to identify and arrest those involved. Section 144 has been imposed to prevent further disturbances, and residents have been urged not to believe in rumors.
