Haryana to Overcome Doctor Shortage Soon as MBBS Seats to Increase to 3,600 – Health Minister

Chandigarh, March 12 – Haryana Health Minister Kumari Aarti Singh Rao announced that the state will soon resolve the shortage of doctors. Speaking during the budget session of the Haryana Assembly, she said that once medical colleges are established in every district, the number of MBBS seats will rise to 3,600.

The health minister stated that in 2014, Haryana had only 700 MBBS seats, which have now increased to 2,185. With new medical colleges under development, the total number of seats will reach 3,600, ensuring that the state no longer faces a shortage of doctors. Recently, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini issued appointment letters to 1,090 newly selected doctors, filling many vacant positions.

Kumari Aarti Singh Rao highlighted the improvement in the state’s gender ratio due to the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2014, the ratio stood at 871 girls per 1,000 boys, which has now improved to 910. The state government remains committed to further balancing this ratio.

She also emphasized that the state government has significantly increased the health budget. In 2014, the budget was ₹2,800 crore, which has now risen to ₹10,000 crore in the 2024–25 budget. Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ₹1,500 crore has been spent, benefiting 40 lakh families.

Taking aim at the opposition, the health minister said that previous governments had mismanaged the healthcare system, which the BJP government has worked hard to fix. She also informed the Assembly that a new urban health center would soon be constructed in Azad Nagar, Hisar. The chief minister had announced this project on June 20, 2024. Once the required land is transferred to the health department, construction will begin immediately. The center will be located just 7 km from the 200-bed district civil hospital in Hisar.
