Dubai, March 10, 2025 – Indian captain Rohit Sharma has put an end to speculations about his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), stating that he has no immediate plans to step away from the format.
Following India’s four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy final, Rohit made it clear that he is here to stay.
“Not Quitting ODIs Anytime Soon”
At the post-match press conference, Rohit firmly dismissed rumors about his future.
“I am not going to retire from this format. Going forward, please don’t spread rumors,” he stated after his match-winning 76 helped India lift the trophy.
When asked about future plans, the 37-year-old responded with his trademark calmness:
“Jo ho raha hain, woh chalta jayega” (Whatever is happening will keep continuing).
Power Play Strategy and Pitch Conditions
Rohit’s aggressive approach at the start of the innings was a well-thought-out strategy, considering the slow nature of the Dubai pitch.
“I haven’t changed my approach in the last 3-4 matches. It is important to score in the Power Play because once the field spreads and spinners come in, batting becomes difficult,” he explained.
His quick-fire 49 in the first 10 overs set the tone for India’s chase before he settled in for a composed 83-ball 76.
“I pick my bowlers and decide where I can attack. After 10 overs, I changed my game and played for the long haul,” he added.
Rohit highlighted the importance of collective team efforts, praising KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer for their contributions.
On KL Rahul’s role at No. 6:
“We needed someone with a calm head in the middle order. KL has been doing that for years. His 30s and 40s in pressure situations were crucial, even if they weren’t big scores.”
On Shreyas Iyer’s importance at No. 4:
“He was vital in the middle overs, forming key partnerships. Against Australia in the semifinal, with Virat Kohli, and again today with Axar Patel, his adaptability was key to our success.”
A Victory for the Nation
Rohit dedicated the Champions Trophy win to the people of India.
“To the whole country—because we know how much our fans support us. Winning this trophy makes the entire team happy that we did it for India.”
With this victory, India has once again stamped its authority in world cricket, and Rohit Sharma remains at the heart of the team’s future.
