Trudeau Fires Back at Trump After Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off Victory Over Team USA

Calgary (National Times): Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a jab at US President Donald Trump on Thursday after Team Canada secured a 3-2 overtime victory against Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Game held in Boston, Massachusetts.

Following the win, Trudeau posted on X: “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.”

His remark was seen as a direct response to Trump’s repeated comments referring to Canada as the “51st state”, calling Trudeau its “governor,” and even suggesting that hockey icon Wayne Gretzky should run for Prime Minister.

Trade Tensions Mount Between Canada and the US

The verbal exchanges between the two leaders come amid rising trade tensions. Trump recently announced:

  • A 10% tariff on all imports from China and a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada as part of an economic emergency declaration.
  • A reduced 10% tariff on Canadian energy imports, including oil, natural gas, and electricity.

In response, Trudeau announced retaliatory tariffs, stating:
“Canada will be responding to the US trade action with 25% tariffs against Can$155 billion ($106 billion) worth of American goods.”

He also encouraged Canadians to avoid traveling to the US as a form of economic pushback.

Trudeau Faces Backlash Over Timing of Hockey Post

While Trudeau’s hockey-related post was well received by many, he faced criticism for posting about the game shortly after a Delta plane incident at Toronto Airport. Many accused him of being tone-deaf and ignoring a serious aviation safety matter.
