New Delhi, February 20, 2025 – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday reaffirmed her commitment to fulfilling the BJP’s promises to the people of the national capital. She announced plans to visit the Yamuna Ghat for an aarti later in the day and confirmed that her first cabinet meeting would take place in the evening.
“We have a cabinet meeting today. We will continuously work towards the mission of Viksit Delhi and fulfill all the promises we made. Later, we will go to Yamuna Ghat for aarti. The cabinet meeting will be held at 7 pm,” Gupta said.
A Historic Oath-Taking Ceremony
Rekha Gupta assumed office at the Delhi Secretariat after being sworn in at a grand ceremony at Ramlila Maidan. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena administered the oath of office to Gupta and her council of ministers.
Six other BJP leaders—Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh—also took the oath as cabinet ministers. The event saw the presence of top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Several chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from BJP-led states and allies also attended.
A Political Journey Rooted in Delhi
Rekha Gupta is the second woman chief minister from the BJP in Delhi and the fourth woman to hold the position in the capital’s history. Elected from the Shalimar Bagh seat, she has held key organizational roles, including general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi and a member of its national executive committee.
She began her political career with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), a student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). A graduate of Delhi University’s Daulat Ram College, she served as the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president in 1996-97 and actively championed student issues.
Gupta later served as a councillor from North Pitampura in 2007, where she focused on developing basic infrastructure such as libraries and parks. She also pursued an LLB and founded the NGO AAS, working on social welfare initiatives.
A New Era for Delhi
Despite being a first-time MLA, Gupta was chosen over several senior leaders, a decision that aligns with the BJP’s emphasis on women’s empowerment. She is currently the only woman chief minister among the BJP-led states.
After her election as BJP legislature party leader, Gupta expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, the party leadership, and the people of Delhi for entrusting her with this responsibility. With BJP’s manifesto outlining several promises, she is expected to take a proactive approach in governance and policy implementation.
