Massive Traffic Jam Near Prayagraj: Thousands of Devotees Stranded En Route to Maha Kumbh

Prayagraj, February 10, 2025: A colossal traffic jam, reportedly stretching up to 300 kilometers, has left thousands of devotees stranded on highways leading to Prayagraj as they head to the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. The situation has been described by netizens as the “biggest traffic jam in the world,” with videos flooding social media showcasing endless queues of vehicles across Katni, Maihar, and Rewa districts in Madhya Pradesh. Major gridlocks have been reported in these areas, with vehicles stranded for hours, causing frustration and distress among pilgrims.

Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram are flooded with images and videos showing miles of stationary vehicles. Some people have stepped out of their cars to sit on highways, while others have resorted to preparing food on the roadside. A stranded devotee shared, “We’ve been stuck here for over 12 hours without any food or water. No sign of police or help.” Netizens have dubbed it the “biggest traffic jam in the world,” comparing it to historical traffic jams in countries like China.

Local authorities in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have been rushed to manage the situation, but traffic police are reportedly struggling to control the overwhelming volume of vehicles. An official from the UP Police stated, “Unprecedented crowds have caused the jam. Efforts are underway to divert traffic and provide relief to stranded pilgrims.” Health concerns are rising, especially for the elderly and children, due to the lack of basic amenities amid rising temperatures. Additionally, commercial transport and supply chains in the region are severely affected, with fears that the situation may worsen as more devotees continue their journey to Prayagraj.

Authorities are working on opening alternative routes to divert traffic and deploying emergency services, including medical aid, water supplies, and food distribution. The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a dedicated helpline for stranded pilgrims to seek assistance. The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, attracting millions of devotees from across India and abroad. This year’s event was expected to witness record-breaking footfall, and the current crisis highlights the logistical challenges of managing such a massive congregation.
