44 MLAs Ready to Form Government in Manipur, Says BJP Leader After Meeting Governor

Imphal, May 28, 2025: In a major political development in Manipur, BJP legislator Thokchom Radheshyam Singh has claimed that 44 MLAs are prepared to form a new government in the state. Singh made this announcement after leading a delegation of ten MLAs to meet Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan.

“We have conveyed to the Governor that 44 MLAs are ready to form a government as per the wishes of the people,” said Radheshyam Singh. He further stated that the Governor assured them he would act in the interest of the people of Manipur and took note of their submission.

When asked if the group had officially staked a claim to form the government, Singh responded, “That is up to the central leadership, but yes, we have informed the Governor of our readiness, which in itself is a step toward claiming it.”

He added that Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh had also met with all the 44 MLAs individually and collectively, and no one among them objected to forming a new government.

This assertion comes at a time when Manipur is under President’s Rule, imposed on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The resignation came amid a prolonged period of instability and ethnic tensions in the state.

Public demand for the restoration of an elected government has been intensifying. Just a day earlier, women in Imphal staged a protest demanding that the MLAs either form a new government immediately or resign. Protesters expressed frustration over the continuing void in governance and the silence of elected representatives.

The BJP’s announcement signals a potential end to the political impasse and raises expectations of a return to democratic functioning in the state. With the support of 44 legislators, the numbers are sufficient to claim a majority in the 60-member Manipur Assembly.
