Ottawa, May 31, 2025 – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday day that his government will launch a sweeping wave of nation-building infrastructure projects aimed at insulating Canadian cities from the economic shock of foreign tariffs, especially those imposed by the United States under President Donald Trump.
Carney’s remarks come amid growing concern over the U.S.’s recently reinstated tariffs, which threaten key sectors of Canada’s economy. Speaking from Parliament Hill, the Prime Minister outlined a strategy focused on high-impact investments in urban transportation, energy grids, and housing development to bolster domestic resilience.
“Our cities are the heartbeat of this country,” Carney said. “They must be empowered to grow stronger in the face of global economic headwinds. We won’t let tariffs derail our vision for a united, self-reliant Canada.”
He emphasized that the planned infrastructure investments will also help drive economic growth, create jobs, and accelerate Canada’s green transition. Among the proposed projects are cross-provincial high-speed rail networks, expanded smart grid systems to enhance energy security, and large-scale housing development under the Build Canada Homes initiative.
Carney also reaffirmed that these projects will be rolled out in close coordination with provinces, municipalities, and Indigenous communities. The goal, he said, is to ensure “every shovel hits the ground with the full force of collaboration and shared ambition.”
This announcement follows Carney’s recent throne speech, which framed the current global climate as a defining moment for Canadian self-reliance and economic transformation. The infrastructure drive is expected to be one of the cornerstones of his government’s domestic policy over the coming years.
