10 Arrested in Gang Rape of Young Woman at Gopalpur Beach in Odisha

Gopalpur (Odisha), June 17, 2025 – Ten individuals, including four minors, have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old woman at Gopalpur beach, Ganjam district, Odisha. The incident took place on the night of June 16, when the woman was visiting the beach with a male friend during the Raja festival.

According to police sources, the group reportedly restrained the woman’s companion and took her to a nearby isolated area, where the assault occurred. The survivor later approached local authorities, and a formal complaint was registered at the Camp police station. Medical examination has confirmed sexual assault.

Seven accused were arrested within 24 hours of the FIR being filed, while the remaining three were apprehended on Tuesday from different locations, including one individual attempting to leave the state. Law enforcement officials stated that all 10 suspects are now in custody and being interrogated.

Ganjam Superintendent of Police Jagmohan Meena confirmed that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to expedite the investigation. The authorities are also consulting legal experts regarding the possible trial of the minor accused under the Juvenile Justice Act, considering the gravity of the offence.

Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida visited the survivor and assured that the case would be pursued with urgency. She emphasized that law enforcement agencies are coordinating closely to ensure a fair and swift trial.

The incident has raised concerns over public safety at tourist spots and prompted renewed calls for improved security and surveillance measures at recreational sites.
