India Seeks Stronger Bilateral Engagement with Bangladesh After New Government Takes Office

New Delhi (Gurpreet Singh): India on Friday expressed its intent to deepen multifaceted ties with Bangladesh following the formation of a new government in Dhaka, reiterating its support for a democratic and inclusive political process in the neighbouring country.

Responding to queries about the recent elections in Bangladesh, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had congratulated Tarique Rahman soon after his electoral victory.

Jaiswal added that Om Birla attended the swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka on February 17 and personally delivered a letter from the Prime Minister to the new Bangladeshi leader. During the visit, Birla also held a bilateral meeting with Rahman.

“The letter underlined India’s commitment to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh,” Jaiswal said.

He noted that New Delhi aims to build upon the historically close relationship between the two countries and maintain close engagement with the new administration in Dhaka. “We look forward to further strengthening our multifaceted bilateral relationship with Bangladesh and engaging with the new government to take cooperation forward,” he said.

The spokesperson further stated that India has conveyed its readiness to discuss all aspects of bilateral relations with Bangladesh as part of ongoing diplomatic outreach.

India and Bangladesh share strong ties across trade, connectivity, security and cultural cooperation, with both sides regularly engaging at the highest political levels.
